Halo: Reach Game Modes and Maps Revealed
Written by USKB    Friday, 16 April 2010 17:54

We look into the gametypes and maps that are coming to the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta.

Many maps and gamemodes will be available in Halo: Reach, an epic conclusion to Bungie's current involvement in the Halo franchise. Those maps you say? Here they are:

MAPS

Overlook-
a wide open valley that overlooks the valleys of Reach, with some good places to jump up with a jetpack. This map is said to a good gametype for Generator Defense. This map is pulled from the Halo: Reach campaign, except Bungie removed the rainfall that you would see in the campaign.

Powerhouse-
built for Slayer and Headhunter gametypes. Map looks similar to High Ground on Halo 3, but features a good open space inside that brings most of the battle indoors.

Swordbase-
with the wonderful trip upstairs and destructible glass, you'll see this small map come perfect for Slayer, Headhunter, and possibly some Stockpile in that gametype mix. There are mancannons, which means you may want to look above- or below, before you move.

Boneyard- the least talked-about map from Bungie, Boneyard, which is set to be bigger than Halo 3's Sandtrap, will be set for the Invasion gametype.

GAMETYPES

Slayer- the original good old fashion Slayer gametype, just a good 'ol deathmatch gametype- go for kills, don't die, and fit some teamwork in. Expected amount of players is set around to 6v6 and/or 4v4.

Free For All- hard to understand from Bungie, the Free For All gametype will be changed, again, we can't really figure that out. Bungie says the FFA will have a Juggernaut, which is a person who everyone tries to kill. The Juggernaut is given a Gravity Hammer, fast speed, low gravity, and apparently "you're on fire. Like fire on fire." Bungie says that the juggernaut is only temporary for the player, so after a good amount of time, it is changed to different player. But, if you kill the juggernaut before the time is out, you get to be juggs, until you run out of time, or die. Again, we're sorry if we got this wrong. It was a short unexplained entry from Bungie, so if we're wrong- then we're wrong. Who knows, maybe they'll include the Juggernaut thing in, along with good old fashioned FFA.

Capture the Flag- team objective gametype; go for enemy flag, return it to your base. Different forms of Capture the Flag are available throughout the Halo series, and it is unknown whether or not they'll include the different types.

King of the Hill-
usually a free-for-all match, this objective gametype puts you against others to stay in designated area for points. The longer you're in the area without anyone else there, the more points you get. The "hill," or designated area moves throughout the map, usually changing within 30 to 45 seconds. Crazy King, a version of King of the Hill will be included as well.

Oddball-
the gametype where you hold a ball, which is actually a skull, and you run away from people who try to kill you. The more time with it, the more points. You get killed as the ball carrier or you kill the player holding the ball, you, or the enemy, will pick it up. There's only one.

Three Plots (title pending)-
the famous gametype from Halo 2 returns, which will make team players capture territories, and them defend them. By capturing a territory, the timer starts, and the longer you hold that territory, the more points you get for the team, which will add up by seconds. Enemy has the same objective. If the enemy captures a territory, you gotta go over there and get it back. Three territories are placed in the game. Don't get killed in the process. This gametype is said to be similar to Halo 2's Three Plots, so it may be a little different from what we have described.

ETC- as said by the Bungie Weekly Update, there will be more gametypes that are returning for the Reach beta.

Headhunter (new)- this new gametype is a team (set for a 4v4 match, possibly up to 6v6) objective game, where a mix of Slayer comes into play. Players must kill enemies, and once they do, the player must go and collect the skulls from the diseased enemy. Once you've picked up the skulls, you need to get to the team's designated area, where you drop off the skulls and go out for more. A player can have as many skulls with them, but if the player dies, the enemy that runs over them (and probably teabags them) will get those skulls. Even if your friend gets a kill, you can go over and steal skulls. This gametype will also end when someone has 10 skulls at once, and scores them in. This will be called a "Skullamanjaro."

Generator Defense (new)- a 3v3 gametype, where the Elite side, who travels uphill, will need to destroy generators, similar to the Rush mode in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Search and Destroy seen in Call of Duty, except with less players. The opposing team, who will be Spartans, will need to defend the generators. From what has been seen in the multiplayer beta trailer, the generators are big, but most recently, they're really, really small. The game consists of 2 five-minute rounds, switching sides after the round is over.

Stockpile (new)- a new version of Capture the Flag (CTF), which will feature four flags that the team must capture and put in a boundary, and defend. After time has past defending the flag, it will be officially captured. If you fail to defend the flags, enemies will bring them out of the territory, either to a new place, or just to tease you by leaving it just outside of the boundaries. The locations of the flags will be randomized, with up to ten different places for each map. The game will feature a score limit to ten, and a ten minute limit, before the game will end.

Covie Slayer (new)-
not much is said about this gametype, but it will be an Elite verses Elite slayer gametype, with some stuff in it, differing from original Slayer.

Invasion (new)- G4 is set to reveal this tonight. Stay tuned for stuff.
